About Zheshan
Its name refers to the reddish colour of the rock and soil.
The larger and smaller Zhe peaks provide a compact elevated landscape within the city. Looking across the urban area and toward the Yangtze is part of the hill’s historical appeal. The two peaks make a more meaningful focus for a visit than treating the park as only an undifferentiated green space.
Zheshan has two peaks: the larger Zheshan, at an elevation of 84.8 meters, and the smaller Zheshan, at 67.9 meters, together covering 48 hectares. Its rock and soil are a deep red color, which gives the hill its name. As the highest hill within the urban area of Wuhu, it has long been a place for climbing to look over the city and out toward the Yangtze River.
“Zhe Pagoda in Clear Mist” (赭塔晴岚) was ranked first among the Eight Views of Wuhu (芜湖八景). Literati of the Song, Yuan and Qing dynasties climbed the hill and left widely circulated poems, and among the historic structures on the hill are the Yilan Pavilion (一览亭) and the tomb of the educator Liu Xiping (刘希平).
The Zheshan scenic area combines Zheshan Park, the Luhecun Tea Art Museum (陆和村茶艺博物馆) and the Guangji Temple (广济寺), a National Key Temple (全国重点寺庙), covering about 630,000 square meters in total. It was rated a national 4A-level tourist attraction (国家4A级旅游景区) by the National Tourism Administration in 2006.
