About Sanya
Central Sanya and Dadonghai offer convenient urban access; Sanya Bay stretches west toward the airport; Yalong Bay is an established resort area; Haitang Bay has larger resorts and major attractions farther east. Moving repeatedly between them can consume much of a day. Choose the beach and neighbourhood that suit your trip, then add a focused outing for hill views, Nanshan’s Buddhist landscape or a rainforest attraction outside the city.
The Yazhou area (崖州) was raised to a directly administered department in 1905. In 1958, the county government moved from Yacheng (崖城) to Sanya. Sanya became a county-level city in 1984 and a prefecture-level city in 1987. In February 2014, the State Council (国务院) approved the creation of four municipal districts.
The city lies at the southern end of Hainan, with high ground to the north and the South China Sea (南海) to the south. It has 209.1 kilometres of coastline, nineteen bays and forty islands. The Ningyuan River (宁远河), Tengqiao River (藤桥河) and Sanya River (三亚河) flow south into the sea. Sanya's coastal scenic area covers 212 square kilometres and belongs to the third group of National Key Scenic Areas (全国重点风景名胜区).
What to look for
- The contrasting settings of Sanya Bay, Dadonghai, Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay.
- Hilltop panoramas and coastal cultural attractions beyond the beach.
The surrounding area
Southern city and beach-stay base; select an actual bay rather than assuming the whole coastline is one neighborhood.

Getting to Sanya
Use Sanya Phoenix Airport or the railway station best placed for your hotel, then book the transfer to the specific bay. The city name alone is not a useful final destination.
