About Zhihua Temple

Zhihua Temple (智化寺) is a Ming-period Buddhist temple in Lumicang Hutong, Dongcheng District, Beijing. Its appeal combines historic architecture, surviving painted decoration and the temple's transmitted tradition of Jing music.

Look closely at the timber structures and interior colour work rather than only the courtyard outline. Research presented by the Beijing Cultural Exchange Museum identifies surviving early Ming painted decoration, illustrating how architectural ornament both protected timber and conveyed status. The temple offers a compact setting in which to notice details that can disappear within a much larger complex.

Its Jing music tradition uses wind instruments such as sheng, guan and flute with percussion. A performance, when available, adds a different way to understand the site, but it should be planned separately from the architecture visit. Pear blossoms are a seasonal feature of the courtyards; the temple's buildings and musical heritage are its enduring reasons to visit.
