About Tongtian Gorge
Tongtian Gorge lies in Pingshun County, in the mountain corridor around Hongtiguan and Dongshitou. High cliff faces, enclosed water and wooded slopes define the landscape. Its named scenic features belong to a wider Taihang setting that also contains historic routes through the mountains.
The Changzhi municipal government identifies Tongtian Lake, Xianren Peak and Hongni Waterfall among the area’s features, alongside the heritage associated with Hongti Pass. These names describe different aspects of the landscape: an enclosed body of water, a high rock viewpoint, a waterfall and a mountain crossing. They should not be assumed to form one continuous visitor path.
Start with the gorge’s proportions, comparing the height of the walls with the width of the water below. Where a higher viewpoint is available, trace how the valley fits between the surrounding ridges. The combination of natural barriers and historic crossings gives the area its character, even when water flow or visibility changes.
What to look for
- Compare the enclosed lake with the high cliff walls.
- Look for the rock forms around Xianren Peak.
- Connect the gorge setting with the Hongti Pass corridor.
