About Yuhuan Dalu Island
The island's wooded appearance grew out of a sustained greening effort: a nursery and forest farm were established from 1963 onward. Along the coast, erosion of volcanic bedrock produced angular outcrops, caves and fancifully named formations such as Shizi Rock. The contrast between the forest and the exposed shore gives the island its characteristic scenery.
Artist Hong Shiqing began carving here in 1985, adapting the shapes of existing rocks into marine creatures. Line carving, relief and fully modelled forms bring an artistic layer to the rocky coastline. Calligraphic inscriptions, including Liu Haisu's rendering of the island's name, add another element to this outdoor collection.
