About Xiaogu Mountain
Its outline changes markedly with the viewing direction, a quality celebrated in local descriptions of the mountain. Winding steps climb between the river-facing rock, temple buildings, plaques and stone inscriptions, making the small area a concentrated landscape of water, stone and religious architecture.
Qixiu Temple traces its foundation to the Tang dynasty. Its shrine to Mazu reflects the dangers once faced by river travellers below the mountain. Across the water stands Penglangji, paired with Xiaogushan in the folk tale of Xiaogu marrying Penglang; the story adds a human image to the two opposing river landmarks.
What to look for
- Xiaogushan’s changing silhouette above the Yangtze and the view toward Penglangji.
- Qixiu Temple and its shrine to Mazu.
- Plaques and stone inscriptions along the winding stepped ascent.
