About Xunyang Tower
The name appears first in a poem by the Tang official Wei Yingwu, prefect of Jiangzhou, and Bai Juyi later wrote about the view from the spot in his poem on Xunyang Lou. What carried the tower's name further was the novel Water Margin, in which Song Jiang writes a seditious poem on its wall and Li Kui raids the execution ground. Jiujiang's municipal government rebuilt the building beside the Xunyang reach of the Yangtze in the spring of 1989, on a site outside the former Jiuhua Gate. The reconstruction occupies about 1,600 square metres, rises 31 metres, and presents three storeys outside but four levels inside, with upswept eaves and a gallery running around all four sides in a Song-revival manner.
The Xunyang District government describes the building as a node of the Jiujiang stretch of the Yangtze River National Cultural Park, a riverside group that also includes Pipa Pavilion, Suojiang Tower and the 1998 Flood Resistance Square, and gives its architectural model as a Song-dynasty riverside tavern. The interpretive scheme inside is organised around the theme of retelling Water Margin in the tower, concentrating on the episodes the novel places in Jiangzhou and widening out to ordinary life in the old city. The district lists themed sculpture, porcelain plate painting, immersive scene reconstruction, three-dimensional figure painting, art porcelain carving, multimedia and graphic panels among the methods used.
What to look for

- The second-floor display of painted porcelain figures of the 108 heroes of Liangshan Marsh, executed as Jingdezhen porcelain sculpture.
- The four-sided gallery of the reconstructed tower, from which the building's relationship to the Yangtze embankment can be read.
