About Wenchangli Historic District

For centuries Wenchangli was the main route in and out of Fuzhou and the busiest commercial street of the old Linchuan city, which earned it the epithets 'historical archive' and 'old-town museum' of Fuzhou. By the early twenty-first century it had become the city's largest shantytown with little commerce left; the municipal government then made its rehabilitation a flagship project, commissioned a conservation plan and urban design from the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design, and adopted Tang Xianzu's opera culture as the district's guiding theme.

The renewal sorted buildings into protected heritage sites, historic buildings and traditional-style buildings, each repaired under different rules, and deliberately kept the lanes, courtyard walls and old trees that make up the street pattern. Alongside restored Ming-Qing street frontages the quarter now hosts museums, opera-themed activities and a large open-air production, 'Xunmeng Mudanting', that stages The Peony Pavilion with holographic projection. The district has been designated a national 4A scenic area, a national night-time culture and tourism consumption cluster (2021) and a national tourism and leisure street (2023).
