About Lushan Mountain

Lushan Forest Park covers 40,000 mu with a forest cover of 95.2 per cent, a mountain landscape of ridges and deep ravines with waterfalls and springs among pine and cypress. The ground falls away from west to east, most of it between 480 and 990 metres, and the bedrock is acidic rock, chiefly gneiss. The county records more than a thousand plant species in the park along with 168 kinds of bird, 22 mammals and 561 insects, and gives the average annual temperature as 11.9 degrees Celsius.

Four natural areas have been opened up: Jinxiu Valley, the Lushan summit, Zizhu Valley and Shengmingyuan. Among the hundred or so named spots are the Xuanyun waterfall, which the county calls Zibo's foremost waterfall, the Wangfeng cave, the Zizhu moso bamboo grove described as the highest and largest north of the Yangtze, the Lushan reservoir described as the highest in Shandong, the longest underground river in the province, the Yixiantian cleft and the Xiangshui pool, together with the Ming-dynasty Mahavira Hall, the Tuochan Temple and the Zhigong Pagoda. Sunrise, seas of cloud and winter rime are listed among the mountain's distinctive sights, and local tradition holds both that Lu Ban invented the saw here and that this is the eastern mountain Confucius climbed when he found the state of Lu small.
