About Weihai Gate of Happiness Waterfront

The building takes the form of the Chinese character for a gate, glazed on the outside, 45 metres high and 42 metres wide, with a lift inside each of its two piers. A horizontal sea-view gallery crosses the opening about 30 metres above the ground at the eleventh floor, and the fifteenth floor holds a stamp and coin exhibition room together with a post office. From the gallery the view east runs over the bay and the curving shoreline to Liugong Island, while the view west is of the city. Weihai’s municipal government calls the gate a landmark building of the city, and local accounts treat it as the starting point of the Weihai coastline.

The gate stands in Xingfu Park, an open shoreline park of about twenty hectares with its own management office. The Huancui District culture and tourism bureau groups the gate, the Wanfu Tu and the Liugong Island passenger pier together as the park’s features on the district’s urban coastal itinerary. Set into the square immediately east of the gate is the Wanfu Tu, a brass ground panel that arranges the character fu in five rings. Sculpture is scattered through the rest of the park, including Yan Qilin’s Weihai Fu, whose text is cut into more than forty metres of marble, and figures of Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong, Confucius, Mencius and Chopin.
