About Zhuquan Village
The village was once called Quanshangzhuang and took the name Zhuquan, meaning bamboo spring, during the Qianlong reign of the Qing dynasty. Springs rise at the foot of the hillside, bamboo grows along the water, and the houses were built around the spring. In 2016 the settlement appeared on the published list for the fourth batch of the national Chinese Traditional Villages register compiled by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development and other departments.
The place a visitor sees today is the product of a deliberate separation of old from new. Under an investment agreement reached in 2008, the whole community was moved into newly built housing to the west of the site on a stated principle of protecting first and developing afterwards, while the old village to the east was laid out for tourism with a system of belts, streets, lanes, pools and bridges. The old houses, old trees, old wells and stone-paved lanes were kept in place, and crafts including bamboo weaving, spinning and black pottery were retained as part of the offer. The scenic area opened to visitors in July 2009, was rated a national 4A tourist area in 2010, was designated a national water-conservancy scenic area by the Ministry of Water Resources in 2011, and was named one of China's ten most beautiful villages in 2014. It is administered together with the neighbouring Hongshizhai area, which is also 4A-rated.
