About Lihuangpi Road Historic District
Seventeen buildings from the old concession survive along the road, among them the former Russo-Chinese Bank, the former Russian police station, the former Russian concession municipal council, the YMCA, the Shunfeng foreign trading house, the Bagong apartment block and the former International Hospital. From 2015 the block was comprehensively renovated as part of a wider programme for the Hankou historic townscape, following a repair-as-found approach, and the result is promoted by the city as a 'street museum' of old Hankou architecture. Since the restoration work was completed in 2016, museums, exhibition spaces, cafes and small independent shops have occupied the buildings.
Two conversions anchor the street's interpretation: the former Jardine Matheson apartment building now houses the Memorial Hall of the Former Site of the CPC Central Committee Organs in Wuhan, and the landmark Hankou Water Tower has become an exhibition hall on the city's water culture. On 1 March 2023 the Ministry of Culture and Tourism included Lihuangpi Road Historic and Cultural Street in its second batch of national-level tourism and leisure streets, one of two Hubei streets listed in that batch.
