About Anjiang Agricultural School Memorial Park
Yuan Longping graduated in 1953 at the age of 23 and was posted by the Hunan provincial agriculture department to this school, below the Xuefeng mountains in western Hunan. In the early 1960s he found an unusually vigorous rice plant in the experimental field here, which set him on the line of work that became hybrid rice; after examining more than 140,000 panicles and two years of experiment he completed the paper 'Male Sterility in Rice' in February 1966. He worked and lived at the school for 37 years. The school itself continues as the Anjiang campus of Huaihua Vocational and Technical College.
What is preserved is a campus rather than a single museum. More than 30 representative buildings and research facilities from different periods of the school's history survive, together with the experimental field itself. The grounds also contain older layers: Shengjue Temple, the command post used during the Xuefeng Mountain campaign against Japan, and the offices of the Qianyang prefectural revolutionary committee. The park is a national AAA-level tourist area and combines teaching, research, heritage display and education.
