About Jiangbeizui Riverfront
A Chongqing municipal housing commission archive account describes Jiangbeizui's history from the Western Zhou period, when it says the area was the capital of the state of Ba, through Han-dynasty commerce and Tang-Song river trade to its emergence, after Chongqing's 1891 opening as a treaty port, as a major foreign-trade harbour and, after 1949, the city's chief hub for import and export goods. A Xinhua Daily Telegraph feature records that redevelopment began with the demolition of three buildings on Xiaheng Street on 12 October 2003, and that by the time relocation around Gailanxi was complete, about 27,400 households (roughly 120,000 people) and about 185 enterprises and institutions had been moved and about 2.2 million square metres of old housing demolished; construction of the Jiangbeizui central business district began in 2005 with projects including the Chongqing Grand Theatre and Chongqing Science and Technology Museum.
The Xinhua feature records that after more than twenty years of development Jiangbeizui, on a 6.83-square-kilometre site, has more than 150 high-rise buildings, 82 of them business towers, and has become what the article calls the area of the city with the clearest concentration of financial institutions and functions, reflected in an industry saying that pairs it with Shanghai's Lujiazui. As of the end of September 2024 more than 5,800 enterprises had located there, including 44 Fortune Global 500 companies and 47 Chinese Fortune 500 companies, alongside more than 320 financial institutions including 86 regional-level-or-above financial headquarters.
