About Chongqing Garden Expo Park

Chongqing Garden Expo Park (重庆园博园) is a garden park of 3,300 mu (about 220 hectares) laid out around Longjing Lake (龙景湖) in Yuanyang Subdistrict (鸳鸯街道), Liangjiang New Area (两江新区), Chongqing. It was built to host the 8th China International Garden and Flower Expo.

Water takes up 800 mu of the site, and the land around the lake is hilly, with steep changes in height and several small streams. The designers used this to arrange the park as hills wrapped around water, with four functional zones, 14 scenic areas and 26 featured sights. The city government describes it as a rare "3D" garden expo set among real hills and water, and as the first national-level garden expo park in central and western China.

In November 2010 a city government meeting signed off the site plan along with building designs for the Bayu Garden (巴渝园) and the central exhibition hall. Construction was complete by 19 November 2011, when the gates opened for the expo, which ran until April 2012 and drew 113 cities: 83 from China and 30 from other countries. It became a national 4A tourist attraction in May 2014.

Longjing Lake was badly polluted when it was first filled in 2011: industrial and household sewage had pushed nitrogen and phosphorus far over the limits, leaving the water worse than Grade V. Liangjiang New Area's municipal and environmental departments shut down upstream farms and closed discharge outlets, while the park brought in about a hundred aquatic species such as iris, built seven high-level pools to recycle water and passed treated toilet effluent through planted filters. The lake now reaches Grade IV, with some areas at Grade III, and the park was the first in Chongqing to be named a municipal "zero-waste park".

Today visitors walk a 12.8 km lakeside road and 25.2 km of footpaths past 127 exhibition gardens, more than 40 pavilions and corridors, and seven classical stone bridges. More than 660 plant species grow here, and six of the gardens are each planted to show off one signature blossom.
