About Tongjing Hot Spring
A Chongqing Municipal Local Chronicles Office gazetteer excerpt records 25 natural spring outlets at temperatures from 35 to 62 degrees Celsius with a daily outflow of 18,000 cubic metres, of several types including sand-welling, hanging, pearl and geologically accreting springs; the resort operator's own site instead gives spring temperatures up to 52 degrees Celsius and a daily flow of 6,000 cubic metres, a figure not reconciled with the gazetteer's here. The gazetteer records Wentang as the first gorge of the Tongjing canyon, and describes the 3.2-kilometre Wentang gorge river reach, made up of three gorges, Wentang, Tongjing and Laoying, earning it the name 'Little Three Gorges', with cliffs rising 170 metres at up to 90 degrees on both banks, covered in green bamboo and vines, and a winding channel of eight large bends wide and calm enough for boating.
Macaque troops inhabit the gorge cliffs, leaping among the trees and clinging to rock faces; the gazetteer records that the sight, known as 'Tongjing gorge macaques', was already included among the 'twelve scenes of Ba-Yu' during the Qing Qianlong era. The scenic area also holds 71 recorded karst caves across six levels, including the developed Ganying, Rufo and Houzi caves with varied stalactite formations, while an undeveloped cave, Yangjia Cave, is described by the gazetteer as one of only three known thermal caves in China. The resort operator's own site lists a cumulative visitor total of more than 3.3 million and industry honours including recognition as a national five-star hot-spring enterprise.
