About Wuliang Mountains Nature Observation Trail
The reserve spans Jingdong County and Nanjian Yi Autonomous County (Dali) at elevations of 1,600-3,371 m, covering 31,585 hectares, of which 23,981 hectares lie in the Jingdong section. It began as two separate provincial reserves approved in 1986 and 1995, merged and upgraded to national status by the State Council in 2000. It protects the western black-crested gibbon, grey langur and 60 nationally protected wildlife species, regionally endemic amphibians, a migratory-bird corridor over Fenghuang Mountain, 12 nationally protected plant species including the Himalayan yew, and old-growth montane evergreen broadleaf and moss forest.
The reserve is a stronghold for the western black-crested gibbon's Jingdong subspecies, found only in the Wuliang Mountain area: of a worldwide population of roughly 87 groups (600-plus individuals), 83 groups live within or around this reserve, out of a global species total of about 340 groups (1,400 individuals). Jingdong County is described as a concentrated distribution area for both the gibbon and the grey langur.
