Niyang River Scenery 尼洋河风光

Niyang He Fengguang

The Niyang River (尼洋河, Tibetan 娘曲) runs through Bayi District in the Nyingchi municipality of Tibet, and the district culture and tourism bureau treats its scenic belt as one of the district's landscapes combining natural and human features; the Ministry of Ecology and Environment calls the river the mother river of the Gongbu region.

About Niyang River Scenery

The ministry's 2025 case study, published in its 美丽河湖 column of exemplary river and lake cases, gives the Niyang a length of 307.5 kilometres, an annual runoff of 22 billion cubic metres and a basin of 15,459 square kilometres, and glosses 娘曲 as Tibetan for the tears of the goddess. The district bureau traces the river to two headwater branches, one rising at 错木梁拉 on the west side of Mila Mountain and the other at 里同拉, which run north to south through the 娘蒲 valley and meet the Mila Mountain tributary at 太昭村.

The set piece the district bureau names is the meeting of the waters: eight kilometres from 帮纳 is the confluence of the Niyang and the Yarlung Zangbo, where the water is broad and the two currents stay visibly distinct — a sight the bureau singles out.

The ministry's account of the river's condition is candid. The basin is good overall, it says, but water is unevenly distributed in space and time, the environment is fragile and sensitive, rural non-point-source pollution is marked, and the basin has seen riverbank woodland and grassland shrink, water-conservation capacity decline, glaciers retreat, grassland degrade and soil erode. Against that, it reports that after a programme of water-resource assurance, water-environment treatment, water-ecology restoration and routine maintenance, water quality at the nationally monitored section has held steady at Class II, and that fish resources have risen to 2 orders, 4 families and 10 genera, among them protected and endemic species such as 异齿裂腹鱼, 拉萨裂腹鱼, 尖裸鲤 and 黑斑原鮡. It adds that Bayi District has been awarded both the national eco-civilisation construction demonstration district title and the 'two mountains' practice and innovation base title, and that Nyingchi has been awarded the national forest city title. The ministry's figures are for the river as a whole in Nyingchi, not for the Bayi District reach alone, and no cited source designates a named viewpoint on the scenic belt.

What to look for

  • The confluence of the Niyang and the Yarlung Zangbo, eight kilometres from 帮纳, where the district bureau says the two currents remain visibly distinct across a broad water
  • The river itself along the Bayi District reach, which the ministry measures at 307.5 kilometres over its whole course and calls the mother river of the Gongbu region
  • The protected and endemic fish the ministry lists for the river, among them 异齿裂腹鱼, 拉萨裂腹鱼, 尖裸鲤 and 黑斑原鮡
