About Laolongtan Gorge in Jingyuan
Laolongtan is a gorge and pool landscape south of Jingyuan’s county town, associated with the headwaters of the Jing River. Enclosed rock walls, water and vegetation make it a distinctive part of the Liupan mountain area. The Chinese name means Old Dragon Pool, reflecting stories attached to the river and its source.
Jingyuan’s government introduces the site through both its water-source setting and literary legends, including stories about the Jing River Dragon King. Ningxia’s tourism department describes a fault-related mountain gorge. These are different forms of interpretation: the gorge’s physical landscape can be observed directly, while dragons and legendary events belong to the cultural stories told about the place.
Follow the currently open route and compare the enclosing slopes with the changing shape of the watercourse. Look for places where the gorge narrows and where water collects, using designated viewpoints rather than trying to reach every pool. Read story panels as part of the site’s cultural identity, without treating the colour of a rock or a pool’s name as geological proof of a legend.
