About Star Ferry Harbour Crossing
The Star Ferry carries passengers across Victoria Harbour between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Its short crossings make the harbour itself part of the journey, with changing views of both shores at water level. It is a transport service with a long history, as well as an enjoyable way to understand the city’s geography.
The operator traces its origins to an earlier ferry service in the nineteenth century, with the Star Ferry company established in 1898. Its familiar double-ended boats work the Central–Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai–Tsim Sha Tsui routes. These ordinary point-to-point journeys are different products from a dedicated sightseeing cruise, and they do not all depart from the same island pier.
Choose the crossing according to where you want to arrive. During the trip, compare the changing spacing of the towers and the activity on the water; the moving viewpoint explains relationships that a fixed waterfront photograph hides. On arrival, continue with a walk on the opposite shore so the crossing becomes part of a coherent route rather than an immediate return trip.
