About Tai Long Wan Coastal Trails in Sai Kung
Tai Long Wan in Sai Kung is a sequence of four bays: Sai Wan, Ham Tin Wan, Tai Wan and Tung Wan. Hills divide the sandy beaches and create changing views as a walker moves between them. This is the eastern Sai Kung coastline, distinct from the beach called Big Wave Bay near Shek O on Hong Kong Island.
The geopark describes the area as a coastal sedimentary landscape within the wider volcanic terrain of High Island. The recognised walking approach from Sai Wan Pavilion descends toward Sai Wan, with a further section leading to Ham Tin. Seeing more than one bay reveals how the coastline alternates between headlands and deposited sand, rather than presenting one continuous beach.
Choose a route with a defined endpoint and enough daylight for the return. The bays are exposed, and the geopark specifically warns about strong currents and waves and advises visitors not to enter the water. A coastal walk does not make the beaches supervised swimming places or turn an offshore boat transfer into a guaranteed return option.
What to look for
- Compare the four-bay coastline from established trails.
