About Hsinchu Zoo

Hsinchu Zoo occupies a compact corner of Hsinchu Park in the city's East District. Established in 1936, it has a much longer civic history than its modest scale suggests: the zoo grew out of a park and children's recreation area, becoming a familiar outing for generations of local families.

A major regeneration programme changed the way the animals and visitors share the site. The zoo closed for rebuilding in 2017 and reopened in December 2019 with habitat-style spaces and an emphasis on animal welfare, education and recreation. The setting is designed to encourage observation of behaviour and living conditions rather than simply moving past a row of cages.

Its location also gives the visit an urban-park context. The wider Hsinchu Park includes Lichi's waterside landscape and historic Japanese-style buildings, which have their own histories and access arrangements. Within the zoo, follow the available viewing route and take time at the interpretation; a small site can reward patient observation, and the animals' visibility will vary with their needs and daily routines.

Getting to Hsinchu Zoo

Use the zoo entrance on Shipin Road in East District. A visit can be paired with the wider park; treat its other buildings as separate stops and follow the zoo's rules on feeding, noise and animal contact.
