About Baishatun Gongtian Temple
Gongtian Temple is the Mazu temple of Baishatun in Tongxiao Township, on Miaoli's coastal side. Its religious life is closely associated with a long-established walking pilgrimage to Beigang. The temple is therefore both a local place of worship and the point of reference for a much wider community of devotees.
The building rewards attention in its own right. Colourful cut-and-paste ceramic decoration along the roof and richly finished eaves express the craftsmanship of a temple frontage. Compare these dense decorative surfaces with the movement of worshippers through the forecourt and halls; the visual richness belongs to an active ceremonial space.
The pilgrimage's route is known for being determined through the palanquin tradition rather than following one permanently fixed tourist itinerary. For devotees this has religious meaning; for a visitor it also explains why an old route map is not a reliable plan for a future procession. A quiet temple visit and participation in the pilgrimage are different experiences, with very different crowd levels, distances and preparations.
