About Chung Tai Chan Monastery
Chung Tai Chan Monastery is a large Buddhist complex near Puli in Nantou County, combining an active religious institution with monumental contemporary architecture. The building was developed through the vision of Master Wei Chueh and architect C. Y. Lee, drawing on traditional monastic ideas while using modern construction methods.
The complex contains spaces with different religious and practical roles, including meditation halls, the Four Heavenly Kings Hall, Bodhisattva Hall, Three Buddhas Hall, lecture areas and facilities for receiving visitors. This variety matters: the imposing exterior belongs to a functioning monastery, and an open public hall should not be taken as access to every part of monastic life.
Gardens, arranged rocks and trees give the approach a different scale from the main building. Moving between these landscaped spaces and the larger halls makes proportion and sequence useful themes for a visit. Art and cultural collections add another aspect, but individual exhibition spaces can have their own arrangements. Read the architectural setting alongside its Buddhist purpose, allowing worship and practice to determine how public visitors move through the site.
What to look for
