About Kenting National Forest Recreation Area
Kenting National Forest Recreation Area protects a distinctive forest on elevated coral-reef limestone above the Hengchun Peninsula's coast. Its rocks originated in a marine environment, while uplift and subsequent weathering created the setting for a tropical seasonal forest. This inland landscape adds a different dimension to a region often approached mainly through its beaches.
Trees reveal how vegetation adapts to the limestone. Large bishop-wood trees grip the reef rock, looking-glass mangroves develop buttress roots, and banyans send down numerous aerial roots. The area also has a botanical history: the Hengchun Tropical Botanical Garden was established here in 1906, leaving a long association with plant observation and research.
Limestone caves and formations, including those interpreted around Yinlong Cave and the stalagmite area, provide a geological counterpart to the forest. Wildlife and seasonal birds add further interest when visible, but no particular sighting should be assumed. Follow the open recreation-area route and compare the rock, roots and canopy together; the unusual feature is how a former marine substrate supports the present forest ecosystem.
