About Huizhou Ancient City
The old city served successively as the seat of regional administrations, including Huizhou Prefecture. Its surviving gateways, enclosed gate defences, streets and lanes preserve the pattern of this official and commercial centre. Doushan Street and the areas around the old gate towers form part of that larger urban setting.
Xu Guo's Ming-period memorial is built on eight stone columns arranged around a rectangular space. Stone beams are joined in imitation of timber construction, while lions at the bases and reliefs of birds, animals and plants animate the structure. Its inscriptions proclaim the official titles and honours of the man for whom it was built.
