About Liyang Old Street
Across the Heng River from Tunxi Old Street, Liyang developed as a riverside commercial settlement. The present leisure district opened in 2013 after redevelopment, bringing cultural, dining and riverside spaces into the old street area. Its historic atmosphere comes partly from surviving buildings and partly from deliberately introduced Huizhou design features.
The Shi family residence retains brick, timber and stone carving around its courtyards and has been adapted for cultural uses. The Jia residence, with grey tiles, white outer walls and an internal skywell, was converted into a gallery about notable people of Huizhou. These older houses give a different view of the district from its modern glass-and-steel additions and designed water features.
What to look for
- Brick, timber and stone carving at the Shi family residence.
- The Jia residence's white walls, grey tiles and internal skywell.
- The contrast between retained courtyard houses, modern additions and landscaped waterways.
