About Tiantangzhai
On the Anhui side, waterfalls and forested valleys provide a clear focus: Jiuying Waterfall is one named stop in the cascade area, while Baima Grand Canyon follows water through a lower gorge. Higher ridges belong to a more demanding mountain outing. Plan around one open valley route before adding elevation, and distinguish this entrance from the separate Hubei-side scenic approaches.
The protected area covers 20.3 square kilometres, with elevation across it ranging from 700 to 1,729.13 metres, and forms the core zone of the Dabie Mountain National Geopark (大别山国家地质公园). It comprises five zones: a waterfall cluster, Shengua Peak (圣卦峰), Baima Peak (白马峰), Zaoqian'ao (造钱坳) and the Baima Canyon.
More than 1,000 plant species grow in the area, including several oak species, the Huangshan pine (黄山松) and Hubei crabapple, along with nationally protected plants such as the Chinese plum yew (三尖杉) and the Chinese tulip tree (鹅掌楸). Eighteen nationally protected rare animal species live there, including the leopard, the small Indian civet and the Chinese giant salamander. Three national forest parks lie in the surrounding counties, in Luotian, Jinzhai and Yingshan.
The area became a provincial-level scenic area under the Anhui government in 1987; in 1992 the forestry authorities approved Tiantangzhai National Forest Park (天堂寨国家森林公园) there, and in 1998 the State Council approved Tiantangzhai National Nature Reserve (天堂寨国家级自然保护区). In 2005 the natural resources authorities approved the Dabie Mountain National Geopark (大别山国家地质公园), with Tiantangzhai as its main area. It was rated a national 4A tourist attraction (国家4A级旅游景区) in 2007 and a national 5A tourist attraction (国家5A级旅游景区) in 2012.

Background & history
Tiāntángzhài (Chinese: 天堂寨) is the second highest peak of the Dabie Mountains located on the border between Hubei and Anhui provinces in the People's Republic of China. Straddling Hubei's Luotian County and Huanggang City along with Jinzhai County in Anhui, the mountain rises to a height of 1,729.13 metres (5,673.0 ft) above sea level. It forms the watershed between the Huai and Yangtze Rivers and is also known as the "Number one pass in the southeastern Yangtze River region" (吴楚东南第一关). During the Tang and Song dynasties Tiantangzhai was known as "Yun Shan" (云山, Cloud Mountain). In the Yuan and Ming dynasties it became "Duoyun Shan" (多云山, Mountain of Many Clouds). The present name dates from the Qing dynasty.
