About Zhanggong Mountain Park
Zhanggong Mountain Park (张公山公园) is a hill-and-lake park of about 110 hectares in Yuhui District (禹会区) of Bengbu (蚌埠), Anhui, made up of Zhanggong Mountain (张公山), Zhanggong Lake (张公湖) on its eastern side and Zhanggong Island (张公岛) in the lake.
The summit stands 71.2 m above sea level, and 56.6 hectares of the 110.6-hectare site is land. Legend names the hill after a general surnamed Zhang who campaigned with Zhu Yuanzhang (朱元璋), founder of the Ming, and spent his last years living here; local people honoured him by giving the hill his name. The lake was formerly called Zhanggong Mountain Big Pond (张公山大塘) and drains towards the Huai River (淮河).
Bengbu's government decided in 1973 to turn the hill and its surroundings into a park. Building began two years later, a boat landing was completed on the east side of the hill in 1978, and the park opened to the public on 1 July 1983. In 2009 the scenic area was rated national 4A. Works in 2013 rebuilt the road around the hill, redesigned the north gate with three new arched bridges, and added the "Sister Bridges" (姊妹桥), two walkways on the water that link the island to the main park for the first time.
Zhanggong Island, built up as a park from 2008 and completed in 2011, takes clean government as its theme. Its scenes retell stories such as Yu the Great (大禹) passing his own door three times without going in, and a statue of Zhong Kui (钟馗) stands there. The island combines woodland with educational plantings and shores set with ornamental rocks.
