About Heilongtan Gorge in Miyun
Heilongtan is a mountain gorge in Shicheng, Miyun District, known for a sequence of pools, streams and waterfalls. It lies north of Lupiguan in the hills around Miyun Reservoir. This is the Beijing attraction; the name Black Dragon Pool also belongs to unrelated parks and scenic sites elsewhere in China.
The tourism authority describes a roughly four-kilometre gorge with substantial changes in elevation. Water gives the valley its organising theme, linking enclosed pools with narrower passages and more open rock faces. The experience is therefore a walk through changing terrain rather than a single lake viewpoint.
Follow the marked valley route and compare the water at different levels: a calm pool, a channel and a cascade show different effects on the surrounding rock. The amount of water and the appearance of each feature vary with conditions. An attractive photograph from another season should not be treated as a promise of the same waterfall flow.
