About Paleozoological Museum of China · Beijing
The Paleozoological Museum of China (中国古动物馆) in Beijing is the fossil museum created by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology. It is on Xizhimen Outer Street in Xicheng, near Beijing Zoo and Beijing Planetarium.
The exhibition sequence follows vertebrate evolution, from ancient fishes and amphibians through reptiles, birds and mammals to early humans and stone tools. Dinosaur skeletons are prominent, but the museum's subject is broader than dinosaurs alone. Compare the body structures shown in different groups to see how the evolutionary sequence ties the displays together.
Representative displays described by the institute include Lufengosaurus, Mamenchisaurus, the Yellow River elephant and models associated with Peking Man. Labels distinguish fossils, mounted material and replicas, a useful habit when visiting with children. This guide concerns the Beijing museum; the institute also helped establish a separate Paleozoological Museum in Baoding. Confirm the city before selecting a route or booking an activity.
