About Beicang Creative District

A Xinhua News Agency dispatch traces Beicang to the wartime relocation of large cotton mills to Chongqing and records that it was built as a cotton-warehouse in the 1960s; as the city grew, old factory buildings nearby were demolished in the late 1990s, but Beicang was preserved and became, in the agency's words, the only surviving textile-industry relic in Chongqing's main urban area. Around 2015 the young Chongqing designer Li Chuanbo identified the site for creative redevelopment, and local government, then moving away from large-scale demolition-and-rebuilding, agreed to redevelop it through what the dispatch calls 'organic renewal': the original building forms were kept, with only light repair and cleaning of the exterior facades.

A 2024 report on Huolong Wang, Chongqing's official internet news portal, records that the district received about 90,000 visitor-trips over that year's Dragon Boat Festival holiday, with tenant businesses averaging more than 1.5 million yuan in daily revenue, and that it has received dozens of honours including recognition as a national cultural-industry demonstration base and inclusion in the first group of national tourism and leisure streets; in 2022 an adjoining residential area, Beicang Li, began a renewal project that opened up nearly 20 previously walled-off compounds into a single mixed-use street district. Both of these sources describe the site under the pre-reform name Jiangbei District; a Chongqing municipal government notice of November 2025 abolished Jiangbei District and Yubei District and established Liangjiang New Area over their former territory, formally inaugurated as an administrative district on 25 January 2026.
