About Chiyou Jiuli City
The complex is built around the legend of Chiyou, leader of the Jiuli tribal alliance and a hero worshipped by generations of Miao people; Jiuli is presented as one of three great legendary tribal alliances and traced as ancestral to the Miao people, with the site's layout evoking the Battle of Zhuolu, the Jiuli alliance and the Miao people's westward migration. Its core structures are named as the Signature Gate Tower, the Big Dipper Sacred Drum Pavilion, the Jiuli Tribe area, the Chiyou Main Hall, the Jiuli Sacred Pillar, the Yu Wang Palace, the Jiuli Hidden Path, the Jielong Bridge and the Miao Opera Tower.
The site has been awarded three titles by China's Greater World Guinness records programme. The Nine Gates, a sequence of nine gate-towers in stone, wood and brick-and-wood construction built along the ridge at the site's mountain gate and named after nine Jiuli tribal names, was awarded a title as the Miao architectural site with the most gate-towers built anywhere. The Jiuli Palace, a 99-metre cluster of stilt houses built up the hillside containing a Jielong hall, a Shailou-Hukou hall, a courtyard and a figure-eight gate, was awarded titles as the world's tallest and largest stilt-house structure and the world's largest courtyard building. The Jiuli Sacred Pillar, a carved white-marble pillar 24 metres tall made by 30 craftsmen over eight months and carved with images of the 36 Tiangang and 72 Disha deities, was awarded a title as the tallest, largest-diameter Miao totem pillar with the most carved deity figures. The site also displays intangible-cultural-heritage crafts including Langxi Zhubanqiao papermaking technique, Miao batik, Miao paper-cutting and the Tuo family's Miao silversmithing technique, and holds daily performances including bamboo-pole dance and Cai Huashan interactive shows alongside an indoor themed stage show called Miao Ancestor Chiyou.
