About Mountain City Trails
The municipal list files the city-wall trail at Daijia Lane and the mid-slope cliff-line trail under the Yuzhong District heading. The route most fully described by the district government is the Shancheng No. 3 Trail, which runs 1,748 metres from north to south down the peninsula's south-facing slope, falling 79.5 metres between its high point near the Bodhi Vajra Pagoda and its low point at the entrance to Shancheng Lane. From north to south it passes Chongqing Zhongshan Hospital, in the building that once housed the Nationalist government's Legislative Yuan and Judicial Yuan, then Kangjiantang, the pagoda, the No. 1 Waterworks tower, a cantilevered cliff walkway, the site of the French Renai Tang, a shikumen gateway and Shancheng Lane itself. The route is shaded by trees and lined on both sides by houses several decades old.
Shancheng Lane is a branch of the city-wall trail, set in the southwest of the peninsula between Nanqu Road, Zhongxing Road, the Shibanpo interchange and Jintang Street, built against a cliff with a 70-metre drop across the site. The quarter covers about 5.2 hectares, of which 2.4 are core protection area and 2.8 a construction-control belt, and the works that rebuilt it began in November 2018 and were finished in September 2021. Remains of Chongqing's old city wall stand inside it, together with the site of the French Renai Tang and a considerable stock of buildings from the 1970s and 1980s.
What to look for
- The cantilevered walkway cut into the cliff on the No. 3 Trail, its goose-yellow railings built out over the drop with the Yangtze opposite; the district government calls it the only city cliff walkway in Chongqing.
- The stretch of Chongqing's old city wall standing beside that walkway, which the district government dates back more than 2,300 years.
- The Bodhi Vajra Pagoda, near the No. 3 Trail's highest point.
- The site of the French Renai Tang, the predecessor of Chongqing's No. 1 Hospital of Chinese Medicine, and the surviving bell tower on the trail.
- Chongqing Zhongshan Hospital, occupying the building that housed the Nationalist government's Legislative Yuan and Judicial Yuan.
