Luxi Roasted Potatoes 泸西烧洋芋

Luxi Roasted Potatoes (泸西烧洋芋) are potatoes roasted and sold at stalls in Luxi County (泸西县), in Honghe (红河), Yunnan. What sets Luxi Roasted Potatoes apart is not the potato itself but the spread of more than twenty condiments that comes with it.

How it is eaten

The Luxi county government notes that roast potatoes are an ordinary food, but Luxi's are different: the stall-keeper sets out more than twenty condiments beside the potatoes, and each customer mixes a dipping sauce from whichever ones they want. Every stall-keeper keeps a condiment selection of their own, so the roasted potatoes taste different from one stall to the next. The Kaiyuan (开远) city government's guide to Honghe food likewise sums up Luxi Roasted Potatoes by their dazzling array of condiments.

Where it comes from

The county government names Laodongshan (老东山) in Luxi as an area that grows potatoes in quantity. Replying in 2019 to a visitor who asked about sights and food, the county listed roasted potatoes among twelve Luxi food and drink specialities, alongside Kangbaoyuan (康宝元) cold noodles and mutton hotpot. A 2023 Yunnan.cn feature on Luxi also names the traditional roasted potatoes with more than twenty seasonings among the dishes waiting for visitors.
