About Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple
Founded in the seventh century, the monastery developed a central sequence of courtyards with separate pagoda courts on either side. The eastern Zhenguo Pagoda was built in 1238–1250 and the western Renshou Pagoda in 1228–1237; their carved Buddhist figures reward attention from the surrounding grounds.
The main hall took its present form in a 1637 rebuilding. Inside, 24 winged musician figures form part of the brackets supporting the roof. Columns reused from a Hindu temple bring Indian religious imagery into the Buddhist building, preserving a tangible trace of the communities connected by Quanzhou's maritime trade.
