About Nanmen Bay
The crescent shoreline is edged by a long seawall, with houses rising in uneven tiers behind it. Begun in July 1962 after destructive typhoon flooding and substantially completed in early 1964, the wall gives this waterfront a history of coastal protection as well as sea views.
The bay became widely recognised after appearing in the 2015 film The Left Ear. Its visual character comes from the contrast between the open water, the curving embankment and the compact hillside settlement; the houses themselves are as much part of the scene as the beach.
What to look for
- The curve of the seawall against the crescent bay.
- Hillside houses stepping upward behind the waterfront.
- The contrast between the close-built fishing settlement and open sea.
