About Huacheng Square

Huacheng Square (花城广场) is a 56-hectare public square on the central axis of Guangzhou (广州), laid out in Zhujiang New Town (珠江新城) in Tianhe District (天河区).

Huangpu Avenue (黄埔大道) bounds the square to the north and Haixinsha Island (海心沙) lies to its south. Guangzhou Chengtou (广州城投) paid for, built and runs it in a project led by the city government, and the authorities present it as Guangzhou's new "city living room" (城市客厅).

Huacheng Square opened in October 2010, on the eve of the Asian Games. The Guangzhou International Light Festival (广州国际灯光节) grew out of the landscape lighting left behind by those Games: it was first staged in 2011 near the Canton Tower (广州塔) and is now held on the square every November. The square was named among the Yangcheng Eight Sights (羊城八景) in both the 2011 and 2025 selections, grouped with the Canton Tower each time, and in May 2024 it entered the first batch of Guangzhou's permanently protected green spaces.

Cars and bicycles are kept off the surface, which is laid out with gardens, ponds, an artificial lake, a large fountain and a man-made flower island. In the evening the square looks across to the lit Canton Tower and the other buildings of the Zhujiang New Town business district. Around its edges stand three cultural buildings: Guangzhou Library (广州图书馆), Guangdong Museum (广东省博物馆) and Guangzhou Opera House (广州大剧院). Below ground are the Huachenghui (花城汇) shopping mall and the automated people mover of Zhujiang New Town, with four stations under the square and passages to neighbouring towers such as the Guangzhou International Finance Center (广州国际金融中心) and the Chow Tai Fook Finance Centre (广州周大福金融中心).
