About Jiaochangwei Village

The fortress above it, whose full name is the Dapeng Garrison Battalion City, was founded in the Hongwu reign of the Ming dynasty under the supervision of Zhang Bin, a battalion commander of the Guangzhou Left Guard. It gave Shenzhen its alternative name, Pengcheng, and was listed by the State Council as a national key cultural relic protection unit in June 2001, with Pengcheng Village named a Chinese historic and cultural village in October 2003. The walled town is an irregular trapezoid of about 100,000 square metres, 345 metres east to west and 285 metres north to south, of which three gates and about 300 metres of wall footing survive. The coast here faces Daya Bay, with hills behind.

Jiaochangwei itself is now known for lodging rather than soldiering. More than three hundred guesthouses had gathered along the seafront by the mid-2010s, drawing comparisons with Gulangyu, and the village is treated by Shenzhen's tourism authorities as the original guesthouse town of the Dapeng coast. The district as a whole had 1,169 registered guesthouses with 10,765 rooms by the end of March 2024, accounting for more than 98 per cent of Shenzhen's total; official planning pairs Jiaochangwei with the fortress as a single tourism area, which is the most useful way to approach a visit.
