About Liuxihe National Forest Park

Liuxihe National Forest Park (流溪河国家森林公园) is a national forest park in Liangkou town (良口镇), in the northeast of Conghua District (从化区), Guangzhou. It lies on the upper Liuxi River (流溪河), 93 km from the city proper.

The park spreads over 8,932 hectares, roughly four times the size of Baiyun Mountain (白云山). Within it lies Liuxi Lake (流溪湖), the water body of the Liuxihe Reservoir (流溪河水库): 1,466 hectares of open water holding 22 islands, and one of Guangzhou's important reserve sources of drinking water. The high ground is in the southeast, where six summits pass 1,000 m, among them Wuzhi Mountain (五指山), Niujiao Mountain (牛角山) and the highest, Jizhen Mountain (鸡枕山), at 1,146.7 m.

The lake is older than the park. Work on the reservoir began in August 1956, water started to rise behind a single-arch concrete dam on 20 June 1958, and the scheme was finished that August. In 1986 the Ministry of Forestry (林业部) approved a national forest park built on the Liuxihe Forest Farm (流溪河林场), and in 1994 it was named one of the first ten national forest parks. In 2025 the Liuxi River corridor, including the park, was chosen as one of the new Eight Sights of Guangzhou (羊城八景) under the title 'Liuxi Misty Islets' (流溪烟渚).

Winter brings the park's signature view, 'Liuxi Fragrant Snow' (流溪香雪): plum groves of more than 3,000 mu, first planted in the 1960s, whose white blossom peaks around New Year. China News Service counted over 100,000 flowering trees in 2023, and a park official described the bloom as coming in three waves, from the lowest branches to the tips. Autumn turns the maples red. Staff say silver pheasants (白鹇), a protected white bird with long tail feathers, can sometimes be seen on the hills beside the boardwalk, and tree ferns (桫椤) grow in the park. Its species lists run to 1,252 wild plants and 255 wild animals.
