About Shenzhen Museum History and Folk Culture Hall
Shenzhen Museum was founded in 1981 and is rated a national first-grade museum. It now works across four sites: the ancient art hall on Tongxin Road, this history and folk culture hall on Jintian Road, the Shenzhen Reform and Opening Up Exhibition Hall and the preserved former command post of the East River guerrillas. The Jintian Road hall opened in December 2008 and has roughly 10,000 square metres of exhibition space given over mainly to the city's history – its ancient and modern periods, its folk culture and the special zone era – alongside a rolling programme of temporary shows. Across all its sites the museum holds more than 228,000 items, including over 27,000 cultural relics of which 5,457 are classed as precious, and more than 201,000 pieces of material evidence, the bulk of them documenting reform and opening.
The permanent display Ancient Shenzhen uses more than 500 objects with sand tables and relief sculpture to set out 7,000 years of settlement, over 1,700 years of urban history, more than 600 years of coastal defence, some 800 years of Cantonese settlement and about 300 years of Hakka migration. A second permanent display, Modern Shenzhen, covers the nineteenth and twentieth centuries through weapons, badges and personal equipment associated with the Second Opium War, the Canton-Hong Kong strike, the East River Column and the Guangdong-Jiangxi-Hunan Border Column. Visitors should note that the separate Shenzhen Reform and Opening Up Exhibition Hall on Fuzhong Road is a different building from this one.
