About Gongcheng Martial Temple

Its sequence includes a raised theatre stage, rain pavilion and halls, with timber carving and roof decoration rewarding a close look. The stage is particularly distinctive: its stone base supports a richly worked wooden structure and a recessed ceiling. Follow the buildings in order to understand the relationship between public performance space and the more enclosed worship halls.

The temple, on the western side of the Confucian Temple at the southern foot of Xishan (西山), was first built in 1603, during the Wanli era of the Ming dynasty, and rebuilt in 1862, in the Tongzhi era of the Qing. It was listed as a Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region protected cultural relic in 1994, and in 2006, as part of the Gongcheng ancient building complex (恭城古建筑群), among the sixth batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level (全国重点文物保护单位). The main hall enshrines Guan Yu (关羽), and the back hall enshrines Mazu (妈祖) and Jiuzi Niangniang (九子娘娘).

What to look for

  • The raised theatre stage combines a stone base with carved timber construction.
  • A recessed stage ceiling and decorated roofline add detail above the visitor’s eye level.
