About Longsheng Rice Terraces
Their appearance changes with cultivation: flooded plots reflect the sky, growing rice turns the slopes green, and harvest changes their colour again. Ping’an and Dazhai belong to different visitor areas, each with its own village setting and viewpoints. Choose one base for a compact visit rather than assuming all of Longji is a single viewpoint or an easy continuous walk.
The terraces lie in Longji town, Longsheng County, and are about 650 years old. The name Longji, meaning dragon's spine, comes from the ridge's resemblance to a dragon's backbone; according to a local saying, the mountains are the dragon's spine and the fields are ladders reaching into the clouds.
The terraces reach an elevation of 1100 meters, with slopes as steep as 50 degrees. They are divided into two viewing areas: the Dazhai terraces, also called Jinkeng or Hongyao, associated with the Yao people, and the Ping'an terraces, associated with the Zhuang people. In early June water is pumped over the paddies and young rice plants are transferred to the terraces.
What to look for
- Curving field embankments trace the shape of the mountainsides.
- Ping’an’s Seven Stars Accompanying the Moon viewpoint centres on small rounded rises within the terraces.
