About Hezhou Jade Stone Forest

The site was opened as Jinqi Shilin. Pinggui district records that after the China geology annual meeting was held in Hezhou in June 2003 geologists came out to look at it, observed that the stone throughout the hill is shot through with white, and identified it as what the district calls hanbaiyu granite, white-marble granite, one of the stones associated with karst country; the name Yushilin, jade stone forest, followed from that. The district also sets out what lies in the same ground: Yanshanian granite intruded the Palaeozoic beds, an altered zone formed, and hydrothermal veins of tin, iron and quartz were injected into it, which is why tin has been worked here for more than a thousand years, from the Song dynasty onward.

Mosses lying on the surfaces of most of the columns have dried and weathered there and stained the stone black, so that the forest reads black against white. Among the rock teeth, pillars and peaks the district names Shilai yunzhuan, Yang huitou, Qingwa wangyue, Yixiantian and Yiwei shi, with others likened to a peacock in display and to a walking dinosaur. The autonomous region's culture and tourism department carried the Yushilin scenic area at grade 4A in Hezhou in its register of A-grade scenic areas compiled to the end of 2021, matching the district's own AAAA listing.
