About Xielu Mountain Villa

The two government accounts disagree on when the estate went up: Yulin city dates its building to 1920, while the autonomous region's Radio and Television Administration gives 1916. The same regional record puts its area at about 0.27 square kilometres. The ground rises, and the buildings follow it: pavilions, terraces, towers and halls linked by winding galleries and paths, the older ones with brick walls and tiled roofs.

What distinguishes the plan is that it is counted out. Yulin city sets down the scheme in order: one small gate, two rings of wall, a three-storey main block, a four-sided main gateway, five rockeries, six houses, seven ponds, eight pavilions and nine-turn alleys, with each number carrying its own scene and each scene its own meaning. The autonomous region's culture and tourism department carried the Luchuan Xielu Shanzhuang scenic area at grade 4A in its register of A-grade scenic areas compiled to the end of 2021.

What to look for

• The three-storey main block, the third term in the estate's one-to-nine scheme
• The seven ponds and five rockeries that the scheme assigns those numbers
• The eight pavilions and the nine-turn alleys that complete the sequence
• The older buildings with their brick walls and tiled roofs, set against the slope
• The winding galleries and paths that link the buildings across the hillside
