Feilong Lake 飞龙湖

Feilong Hu

Feilong Lake is the reservoir that formed on the Wujiang River behind the Goupitan hydropower dam, in Yuqing County in the Zunyi area of Guizhou; the scenic area of the same name covers its islands and the gorge reaches of the river.

About Feilong Lake

The Goupitan station, described by the county government as a landmark project of the west-to-east power transmission programme, closed its gates to impound water on 28 November 2008; the dam that holds the lake back is 232 metres high. Damming the Wujiang produced a long, narrow sheet of water reaching across six counties — Yuqing, Meitan, Wengan, Zunyi, Xifeng and Kaiyang — in the three divisions of Zunyi, Qiannan and Guiyang. The name Feilong Hu, the lake of the flying dragon, was picked by the Yuqing county party committee and county government from more than a thousand suggestions gathered in a nationwide public call and assessed by specialists. What had been gorge scenery along the Wujiang is now a pattern the county describes as lake joined to gorge, gorges within the lake, gorges and lake alternating, with 34 isolated islands and numerous peninsulas.

The scenic area is made up of three parts: Langshuiwan, Feilongzhai and what the county calls the Zuimei Wujiang Gallery. Langshuiwan is the northern entrance, and the county lists six main developed sights there, among them Zuimi Huagu, Shenqi Yuan, the Macaque Peninsula, the Wujiang Gallery and the dam itself. Accounts of the lake's conservation status differ: Xinhua reported in 2021 that it became a national wetland park in 2019, while the county page states that it was approved as a national wetland forest park in 2012.

What to look for

  • The Goupitan dam, 232 metres high, which closed its gates on 28 November 2008 and made the lake.
  • The islands — the county government counts 34 isolated islands, with many peninsulas besides.
  • Langshuiwan, the northern entrance, where the six main sights include the Macaque Peninsula and Zuimi Huagu.
  • The Zuimei Wujiang Gallery, which with Langshuiwan and Feilongzhai makes up the scenic area.
