About Hongfeng Lake

Hongfeng Lake (红枫湖), also called Hongfeng Reservoir (红枫水库), is a man-made lake on the Maotiao River (猫跳河), an upper tributary of the Wujiang (乌江), lying across Qingzhen (清镇市) and Pingba (平坝) in Guizhou. Qingzhen lies directly next to the provincial capital, Guiyang (贵阳).

The lake lies on the Dicheng stretch (滴澄河段) of the Maotiao basin. Qingzhen's government puts its total area at 57.2 km², the catchment it controls at 1,551 km² and its maximum storage at 642 million cubic metres. The deepest water reaches 45 m. It is made up of four basins, the North, Middle and South lakes plus a rear lake, and is classed as a typical karst plateau lake.

Work on the dam, which stands at Hongfeng town (红枫镇) in Qingzhen, began in 1958, and the reservoir started to fill in 1960. A scenic area was created around the water in 1981. Guizhou's provincial government confirmed it as a provincial scenic area in 1987, and a year later the State Council placed it in its second batch of national key scenic areas. It also carries a national 4A rating.

Qingzhen styles itself a lake city set among four lakes, Hongfeng, Baihua (百花湖), Suofeng (索风湖) and Dongfeng (东风湖), and its tourism overview presents Hongfeng as a national scenic area. A route recommended by the city starts from Guiyang with the Hongfeng Lake scenic area, where boats cruise past the islands of the plateau lake and visitors can see local ethnic-minority customs. Two 4A-rated developments lie between Hongfeng and Baihua lakes: Shiguang Guizhou (时光贵州), a tourism town built on old-town and tunpu (屯堡) culture, and the rural-themed resort Xiangchou Guizhou (乡愁贵州).
