About Leigong Mountain Official Visitor Area

The nature reserve's undulating peaks include Lengtang Shan, Wudong Shan, Yecao Po, Mujiang Ao, Leigongping, Lengzhu Shan, Maobi Ling and Jiudong Shan among eleven peaks above 1,800 metres, spanning Leishan, Taijiang, Jianhe and Rongjiang counties over a total area the source gives as 71 wan mu (710,000 mu). The mountain sits astride the watershed between the Yangtze and Pearl river systems and is the source of major tributaries of the Qingshui and Duliu rivers; mean annual temperature at its summit is only 9 degrees Celsius. In 2001 the National Forestry Bureau approved the Leigongshan National Nature Reserve, and in 2002 it approved the Leigongshan National Forest Park.

Described as an important gene bank for China, the reserve has recently seen the discovery of new species including the Leishan stink frog and Wei's slender tree frog; the latter is found only within a narrow band around 1,600 metres elevation, in very small numbers, mostly in bamboo groves beside mountain streams. As of a 2025 report, 5,185 species had been identified within the reserve, including 2,327 animal species, 2,595 higher-plant species and 263 large-fungus species, with 144 species listed as national first- or second-class key protected wild animals and plants. The reserve's wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre, in Xintang village, Datang township, is the only such centre in Qiandongnan prefecture and handles rescue and rehabilitation of birds and mammals for all 16 counties and cities in the prefecture.
