Zunyi Shi Bowuguan

Zunyi Municipal Museum is the city museum of Zunyi in Guizhou, opened free to the public on 26 November 2009 and graded a national second-grade museum. It stands at the junction of Renmin Road and Zhuhai Road in Huichuan District, not in Honghuagang District as the catalogue entry has it.

About Zunyi Museum

The Zunyi municipal register of museums and memorial halls open to the public lists the museum as its first entry: state-owned, of prefecture-level affiliation, second grade, free of charge, filed with the provincial cultural relics authority, with its own website. The same register gives the Huichuan address, and its Honghuagang entries are other institutions — the Zunyi Conference Memorial Hall on Ziyin Road and the Yang Can Tomb Museum at Shenxi — so the catalogue's county attribution does not match any municipal museum. The museum occupies a site of 12,873 square metres with 8,201 square metres of floor space, and its design is meant to express the traditional Chinese idea of a round heaven and a square earth. Beyond the collections it serves as a provincial patriotic education base, science popularisation base and community education base, and as a municipal research-study base for schools.

The museum describes its own basic display as two galleries: a Zunyi history and culture exhibition, 圣地名城、播雅流风, and a Guizhou liquor culture exhibition, 酒中翘楚、醇香典范 — the city's past and the province's distilling traditions treated as the two halves of the permanent presentation. A 2023 page on the municipal government's city service platform gives a different account, naming the basic display 遵义之美 and dividing it into six parts: resource-rich city, cultural treasures, red soil, colourful folk customs, home of the national liquor, and brilliant achievements. The same municipal page states the museum's main functions as collecting, protecting, studying and displaying cultural relics and natural specimens.

What to look for

  • The building itself, whose design the museum says expresses the traditional idea of a round heaven and a square earth, on a 12,873-square-metre site with 8,201 square metres of floor space.
  • The Zunyi history and culture gallery, one of the two exhibition halls the museum names as its basic display.
  • The Guizhou liquor culture gallery, the second of those two halls, which treats the province's distilling traditions as a subject in its own right.
  • Natural specimens as well as antiquities: the municipal government lists natural specimens alongside cultural relics among the museum's collecting responsibilities.
