About Baoduzhai Mountain
Baoduzhai is a steep-sided mountain in Luquan with a surprisingly broad, level summit. It stands where the North China Plain meets the Taihang foothills west of Shijiazhuang. The contrast between the cliff edges and the open ground above is the defining feature of a visit.
The mountain has older names and historical associations, while the organised visitor attraction developed from the 1990s. Named sights include Nantian Gate, the Five Hundred Arhats Hall and walls around the summit area. These visitor features should be read through their own labels rather than all being assumed to survive unchanged from an ancient fortress.
From appropriate viewpoints, the summit setting explains why the mountain could be imagined as a refuge above the plain. A good visit balances the landscape with the cultural attractions on top. The physical climb and the time spent around the summit are separate parts of the outing, especially for groups with mixed walking abilities.
What to look for
- Compare the flat summit with the steep cliffs that surround it.
- Look east towards the plain and west towards the mountain ridges.
- Read construction information at the summit’s gates, halls and walls.
